Public Works Idea Starter: Free Rain Barrels

The Pawtucket, RI, Department of Public Works is offering city residents free barrels to encourage them to harvest stormwater runoff on their property (thereby reducing stress on the City’s drainage system). The water retained in the barrel may be used to water grass or flowers, and in doing so, homeowners lessens their impact on the environment and saves money on their water bill.

The Department of Public Works also collaborated with the Pawtucket Arts and Culture Commission and the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Arts to paint and decorate some of the barrels.
